This competition has now ended.

What is The Assassin’s Cloak? It’s an anthology of diary entries from 170 contributors, ranging from Queen Victoria to Andy Warhol. Canongate Books and The Classic Book Club want you (yes, you) to send us a (fictional) diary entry of your own – and our three favourite entries will win a copy of The Assassin’s Cloak.

Contest rules and guidelines:

  • You may write an entry on any of the following themes: Great Fire of London; The Blitz; Assassination of a prominent figure (it could be a successful or failed attempt); Highland clearances; The end of WWII; Sinking of the Titanic; Partition of India and Pakistan.
  • Diary entries may be written from the perspective of (1) someone who was directly connected to and affected by an event (for example, one of the few who managed to survive the Titanic disaster), or (2) someone who is unconnected to the event but has been affected by it (for example, an ordinary person writing about their thoughts and feelings on the death of Princess Diana).
  • You may choose to write your entry as someone famous, or as an ordinary citizen of the time.
  • The deadline for entries is 1 March 2008.
  • There are three ways to enter the competition: Use a trackback ping, leave a comment with a link to your entry here or send an email using our contact form.
  • Authors of winning entries will be contacted via email, so if you’re posting a trackback to a blog entry, make sure we can contact you in some way!
  • This contest is only open to UK residents.
