This novel is set in 1850s Yorkshire in the times of the woollen mill trade. The reader follows Lally Fraser throughout a turbulent time in her life; becoming a young widow, being confused about love, learning how to run her estate and the family’s woollen mills, and finally falling in love.

It was a good read and I liked the character of Lally; she has to develop from a fairly frivolous young woman into one with huge responsibilities, and I admired her determination and her kindness and empathy with people. I found all the details about the mill trade at that time very interesting; the harsh conditions and child labour and the beginnings of realisation by mill owners that these things should and could be changed and improved. I enjoyed the descriptions of the Yorkshire countryside and people. Much of the story and characters I found quite predictable, and I did think towards the end that there were perhaps a couple more disasters than were necessary, but this didn’t detract from the enjoyment of the book.
